A method for the selection of a compound, or a mixture of compounds, said method comprising the steps of: - providing a genetically altered mouse, wherein said mouse has at least one mutation in a gene that encodes a protein of the Repair path of Nucleotide Excision (NER), said mutation causing a phenotype of premature aging compared to a mouse lacking said mutation; - exposing said genetically altered mouse, or a part derived therefrom, to a compound, or a mixture of compounds; - determining the effect of the compound, or the mixture of compounds, on the phenotype of premature aging of said genetically altered mouse; and - selecting the compound, or the mixture of compounds, that prevents, inhibits, delays or reduces said premature aging phenotype in said genetically altered mouse, where said mutation is in a gene selected from the group consisting of: Xpa, Xpb, Xpc, Xpd, Xpe, Xpf, Xpg, Xpv, Csa, Csb, Ttda, HR23A, HR23B and Ercc1, and where said premature aging phenotype is a shortened life span, increased osteoporosis and / or increased degeneration of the retina compared to a mouse lacking said mutation.
