The device (10) has an emergency lighting unit with a light source and a power supply. A motion detector in the emergency lighting unit generates a motion signal when motion is detected, where the apparatus is switched on when a motion signal generated by the motion detector and ambient lighting is below a predetermined threshold. A housing includes an outer surface for supporting the apparatus when positioned on a bearing surface. The motion detector generates a motion detection plane (21) perpendicular to the outer surface. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating an emergency lighting device (2) a computer program for operating an emergency lighting device (3) a computer readable medium for operating an emergency lighting device.
