The spatial characterization of waste in urban areas is mandatory for designing management strategies including its segregation, collection, transportation and disposal. In this product, an effort has been made to characterize the solid waste within an urban area and generate coefficients through regression analysis for estimating quantities of the waste components for various land use classes spatially. Satellite data has been used to generate population indices for various land use classes. Simple linear regression analysis has been used in the present study to generate indices for computing physical and chemical characteristics of solid waste for residential land use classes. Based on the indices generated, spatial representation of solid waste components using Geographical Information System (GIS) has been carried out which can act as a tool to understand the status of parameters within any urban area. A spatial decision support system has also been designed which can assist a decision maker involved in management of Solid Waste in urban areas. Following invention is elaborated in detail with the help of figure 1 which shows selected bins from where Solid Waste samples were collected for selected LU classes, Figure 2 shows LU Categories identified for generating population coefficients, Figure 3 shows The Land Use/Land Cover map of Nagpur Urban Area, Figure 4 shows Organic Matter in the solid waste estimated using the regression coefficients for various LU/LC classes, Figure 5 shows Paper Content in the solid waste estimated using the regression coefficients for various LU/LC classes, Figure 6 shows Total Quantity of Solid waste (Gm/day/capita) estimated using the SDSS.
