An improved process for the recovery of phosphate (P2O5) from low grade rock phosphate ore which comprises a) grinding the low grade phosphate ore to obtain a product size of all passing 100 microns by using a hydro cyclone, b) subjecting the said ground and classified product to flotation process at an acidic pH ranging from 4.0 to 5.5, c) adjusting the pH with a combination of sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid at higher solids concentration of above 50% solids followed by conditioning with a depressant, d) diluting the above said slurry at above 50% solids concentration to below 25% solids by adding the requisite amount of water followed by addition of a collector such as sodium oleate, e) conditioning the slurry for almost 10 minutes and immediately subjecting it to flotation after adding a frothier for not more than 18 min to obtain 35% P2O5, f) subjecting the above said flotation concentrate to flotation of dolomite by readjusting the slurry pH to about 4.5 followed by conditioning with a depressant such as herein described, g) treating the said conditioned dolomite concentrate with less than 0.3 kg/tonne sodium oleate and subjecting it to flotation of dolomite within 10 minutes to obtain a dolomite concentrate containing ~ 19% MgO with less than 0.3% P2O5 after one or more cleanings under the same conditions.
