Human c-MIR cloned presently is a novel protein originating in a mammal such as a human homolog having an immune suppression function which is a molecule being similar in function to viral proteins, for example, K3 and K5 proteins of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus. By analyzing the functions, it is observed that c-MIR has an immune suppression effect of inhibiting the expression of B7-2 molecule and MHC class II molecule, which are antigen presentation-associated molecules, on the cell surface. Because of having this immune suppression effect, c-MIR is considered as being a factor controlling the expression of an antigen presentation-associated molecule in a human immune system and, therefore, expected as usable in developing a new immune suppression method, inhibiting rejections in cell and organ transplantation, treating autoimmune diseases, developing new drugs and so on and thus highly useful in medicine and industries.
