PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate the motion characteristics of a moving vehicle, with high accuracy.;SOLUTION: This device 10 for estimating vehicle motion characteristics comprises a lateral G sensor 40 and a yaw rate sensor 14 which are movable to an optional position. The device 10 further includes a plurality of sensors detecting the traveling states of the vehicle 1, such as a vehicle speed sensor 46, and estimates the position of center of gravity 31 by the traveling states of the moving vehicle 1 detected by the vehicle speed sensor 46 and the like. The lateral G sensor 40 and the like are moved to the estimated position of the center of gravity 31. According to this, the lateral G and yaw angle rate in the position of center of gravity 31 can be detected. A vehicle side slip angle, that is one of motion characteristics of the vehicle 1, is determined from these lateral G and yaw angular velocity, whereby the vehicle side slip angle can be determined from the lateral G and yaw angular velocity detected at the position of the center of gravity 31. Consequently, the motion characteristics of the moving vehicle 1 can be estimated with high accuracy.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
