The method involves transmitting an information data estimated relative to an exhaust gas treatment system i.e. post treatment system (3) to an onboard diagnostic device (13). The information is recorded in a memory. Validity of the estimated information data is determined by considering ranges of values of parameters e.g. gas flow, utilized during the estimation of data. Proportion of the data, which is non valid with respect to totality of the data, is compared to a threshold, and the comparison result is recorded so as to establish diagnosis of malfunction of the post-treatment system. An independent claim is also included for a system for diagnosing a malfunction of an exhaust gas treatment system of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, comprising an estimation module.
