The method involves calculating an average value of heating current of an oxygen sensor during a predetermined duration i.e. elementary time-window. The average value of the heating current is compared to a threshold value for carrying out preliminary diagnosis of operation of a heating circuit of the oxygen sensor during the elementary time-window. The calculation and the comparison of the average value are repeated for a predetermined number of times. Final diagnosis of the heating circuit is carried out relative to result of the preliminary diagnoses. An independent claim is also included for a device for diagnosing an operating state of a heating circuit of an oxygen sensor.
