Internal combustion engine e.g. oil engine, for motor vehicle, has comparison unit to compare values of calculation units with threshold value, where calculation units calculate difference of air flows measured after controlling shutter
The engine has an air intake conduit (12) provided with a flow meter (14) and an air intake valve (15). A partial exhaust gas recirculation circuit (17) has an exhaust gas recirculation valve (19) and an exhaust gas cooling unit (20) with a by-pass shutter (23). An electronic control unit controls maintenance of an engine operating point in a stable position, and calculation units calculate difference of air flows measured before and after controlling opening and closing of the shutter. A comparison unit compares minimum of values of the calculation units with an air flow threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a method for diagnosing an operating state of a by-pass shutter mounted in a derivation conduit of an exhaust gas cooling unit that partially recycles exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine.
