The method involves calculating a set point distance (Dcons) obtained by a normal control law (L-N) communicating to a braking and acceleration control unit (63) of an adjusted vehicle such that the set point distance between the adjusted vehicle and a target vehicle is followed. The set point distance is obtained temporarily by an overtaking control law in response to the detection of desire of an adjusted vehicle's driver to overtake the target vehicle.
