The method involves determining temporal average values of a time-dependent digital signal (IMAP-Unfilt) e.g. suction tube pressure signal, in temporal signal averaging intervals sequentially, and determining duration of each interval as a function of a value of a size of change of signal (IMAP-Grdt-Cnt). The value of the size of change of signal is updated constantly as a function of a value of a difference signal (IMAP-Grdt-Filt) that is formed from the time-dependent digital signal by subtraction of two temporal sequential signal values and a temporal averaging of the subtraction results. An independent claim is also included for a device for processing a time-dependent digital signal.
