The method involves storing a reference value for a forming channel to be used by pressure segments, in a control unit (2). A maximum value for a torque acting on a displacing device i.e. spindle, is stored in the control unit. A pressure piece is linearly displaced by an electromagnetic drive unit, which is controlled by the control unit. The torque acting on the displacing device is detected. A component (4) is formed by the pressure segments using the reference value for the forming channel, when the maximum value stored in the control unit is reached. An independent claim is also included for a forming device for executing a method for forming e.g. mechanical aligning, clinching or punching, of a component.
