The method involves analyzing a sample (2) and irradiating it by a modulated light source with short light pulses. The radiation released from the sample in transmission or reflection is displayed on the imaging optical elements and forms a spectral selective element on a sensor arranged in the image plane and whose signals are evaluated by a control and regulating unit. The sensor arranged in the image plane is a photon multiplicity detector (PMD) sensor (6).
