The method involves extending a cylindrically formed bearing area (10a) along a rotational axis (A) of a shaft. A part of the shaft is produced by a deformation process, and a deep drawing process and/or internal high pressure deformation process is utilized as the deformation process. Internal high pressure during the internal high pressure deformation process is provided between 2000 bars and 2500 bars. Two partial shafts (26a, 26b) are produced and heat-sealed by the deformation process, and harden steel is used as a shaft material in the bearing area. An independent claim is also included for a shaft for an engine of a motor vehicle, comprising a cylindrically formed bearing area.
