The method involves determining a pair of local cross correlations between corresponding regions of a straightened image incorporated at different times from different mapping directions, for a region of a light section (6) of interest. A displacement is determined between the local cross correlations, where the displacement indicates a visual component of a displacement vector of a light scattering particle (3) from the mapping directions into the region of the light section between the times. The displacement is determined as a third local cross correlation between other cross correlations. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining flow velocity in a light scattering particle carrying fluid stream.
