The stack (10) has a set of solitary cells that are arranged in stacks, where each cell has a membrane-electrode-unit (12) with one proton-conductive membrane (14), a cathode (16) and an anode (18). Bipolar plates are arranged at the unit (12). A dummy cell (22) is arranged between the solitary cells and exhibits a hydrogenate material that is suitable to form hydrogen under formation of a hydride. A hydrogen supply line (24) supplies hydrogen to the anodes and dummy cell, and a hydrogen discharge line removes residual hydrogen from the anode and dummy cell.
