The method involves storing a base response curve for a base output signal depending on a position (S) of a selector fork (5). An amplification factor is determined in a gear position as a quotient from the output signal according to the response curve and the produced output signal. The position of the fork is defined depending on a function for the amplification factor, where the function assumes a starting value in a neutral position (N) and a value of the amplification factor in a gear position. The position of the fork is determined depending on the output signal, function and the curve.
