Split piston ring for performing expansion or compression of piston of e.g. stirling engine, has segments, where pre-loading of ring is adjusted over outer diameter such that ring has exactly same diameter as cylinder
The ring has a pair of segments, where the outer diameter of ring is greater than the inner diameter of a cylinder. Pre-loading of the ring is adjusted over the outer diameter in accordance with a formula such that the ring, whose material exhibits smaller thermal expansion coefficient than a cylinder, has exactly the same diameter as cylinder with operating temperature. Thrusts of the ring are overlapped or gas-tightened. The cylinder is made of high-grade steel 1.4541, and the ring is made of boron nitride, where the ring is pressed to cylinder wall during operation and sealing of a piston.
