The device has a cooling device, which is provided with nozzles for applying a cooling agent on a slab (1) or a strip. The nozzles are arranged or controlled such that the cooling agent is applied, particularly to positions at which an increased temperature is detected. The cooling agent is applying or depending on an observed volume of surface evenness of the strip. The cooling device is controlled in such a manner that the uneven areas are reduced or removed.
