The method involves introducing a test gas into a measuring chamber (20), and determining the change of position of a measuring piston (14) of a measuring cylinder (12) between an initial position and a final position in consequence of the test gas. The pressure in a control volume is determined. The test gas and/or test gas volume in the measuring chamber is determined under consideration of a selected time difference of the test gas mass flow and/or test gas flow rate on basis of a gas equation. The piston is movably supported on a cylinder housing (13) of the cylinder. An independent claim is also included for a measuring device for controlling gas mass and gas flow.
