The device (1) has an impact sound receiver unit arranged in a vehicle (5) such that sound produced by deformation of body and/or vibration produced by the deformation is transferred to the receiver unit. An evaluation unit (3.3) evaluates the detected sound/vibration to detect accident situation of the vehicle. The evaluation unit accepts the sounds/vibrations as correct signal information when the sounds/vibrations are in a predetermined ratio. The evaluation unit verifies whether functionality of a rotational speed sensor is impaired based on sound that is detected by the receiver unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for identifying an accident situation i.e. collision of a motor vehicle, and/or for controlling a passenger protective system.
