The method involves determining a form line (19) of a hollow organ (17) e.g. large intestine, based on image data of the hollow organ, and extracting characteristics of the form line. The hollow organ is divided into sections based on the characteristics of the form line. A tissue characteristic and an object are assigned to one of the sections. The image data of the hollow organ is obtained by a computer tomography method or a magnet resonance tomography method. The image data of the hollow organ is segmented from volume image data of a region having the hollow organ. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for automatic position classification of a tissue characteristic and/or object in a hollow organ (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for automatic position classification of a tissue characteristic and/or object in a hollow organ.
