The closer (1) has a controlling device (3) with a pressurizing medium-spring-damper unit with a piston unit partially conveying a pressurizing medium (11) from a chamber to another chamber that is in reverse by movement of a piston relative to a housing (5) during a door movement to control movement of a door leaf by a piston movement and an adjusting device (2). The medium contains electro-heologic liquid, which exhibits particle e.g. zeolites, ceramics such as electrical ceramics e.g. barium-titanium oxide, strontium titanate, ion-conducting and electron-conducting ceramics and metals. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling movement of a door leaf by a door closer.
