The system has an energy storage at a side of a heavy-duty vehicle for temporary storing of energy amount. A filling unit fills the storage with the energy that is generated during slowing of the vehicle. An extracting unit withdraws the energy amount from the energy storage, which is designed as a flywheel mass storage (SMS). The filling unit has a continuous variable transmission (CVT) that is attached to the mass storage, where the transmission is provided for connection of an axle of the vehicle to the mass storage to mechanically store the energy generated during slowing of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for storing of kinetic energy arising when slowing a motor vehicle e.g. heavy-duty vehicle.
