The method involves controlling a lambda value of an air-fuel mixture by a lambda rule depending on a signal of a lambda sample. The lambda rule is interrupted, and the air-fuel mixture is controlled to a preset lambda value during the starting process of an internal-combustion engine. The lambda value is preset to the value of 1.1 to 1.5. concerning to gas with a heating value of smaller or equal to 1000 Kilo Watt-hours/cubic meters independent of adaptation values applied to an engine controller.
