FIELD: physics.;SUBSTANCE: illuminating system has a plurality of light-emitting elements such as light-emitting diodes assembled into a matrix. One or more light-emitting elements lie in the central region of the matrix. The light-emitting elements in the central region have better performance such as brightness and/or efficiency compared to the remaining part of the light-emitting elements in the matrix. The second region lying outside the central region, i.e. further from the centre of the matrix, includes a group of light-emitting elements having better performance compared to any additional light-emitting elements in the matrix. The matrix may include additional regions further from the centre of the matrix which include light-emitting elements with lower performance.
