A keypad of a portable phone having shortcut keys and a method for inputting the English alphabet by using the same are provided to minimize the number of times a user pressing keys and input the English alphabet more quickly by offering the shortcut keys for easily inputting verbs and an automatic word completing function. An upper keypad unit comprises a sensor bar which is moved according to an operation of pressing keys up and down. A lower keypad unit has input keys(24-26) of a 6x3 matrix. A 'My word' key(21), 'Change' key(22) and 'Verb' key(23) are allocated to input keys of 6 row. The 'My word' key displays a stored word and sentence according as an input key is pushed. The 'Change' key converts an English verb in past type, past participle and present progressive and displays it. The 'Verb' key displays a verbal English alphabet having alphabets, allocated to each input key, as the starting point.
