A novel design of optical packet switch architecture is proposed that incorporates multi-wavelength Fiber Bragg Gratings and fiber delay lines of half slot duration for the buffering strategy. The incorporation of Bragg gratings in the buffer makes the buffering strategy very efficient as the insertion loss of the gratings is negligible and also a Fiber Bragg Grating is a passive device. Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier is used to boost the dwindling intensity of optical signals being carried through the switch. This buffer is very simple in design and extremely easy to control. This new architecture of the switch utilizes the concept of WDM technology to allow packets from all inputs to share the buffer pool. The number of buffer wavelengths in each module depends on the desired traffic throughput, packet loss probability, and other component parameters. The packets to be buffered are converted to the wavelengths available in the buffer.
