PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-liquid separation device and a solid-liquid separation method employing gravitational sedimentation and filtration in combination capable of prolonging the life of its filter, and a method of cheaply and highly efficiently preparing ashless coal sufficiently removed of ash.;SOLUTION: The solid-liquid separation device 50 is equipped with a sedimentation tank 1 that stores slurry and allows solid components to sediment; an opening 20 that allows supernatant liquid in the sedimentation tank 1 to flow thereinto; a supernatant-liquid discharge pipe 2 that discharges the supernatant liquid flowing thereinto to outside the sedimentation tank 1; a filter 10 that catches solid components in the supernatant liquid and is disposed on the opening 20 of the supernatant-liquid discharge pipe 2 in a manner causing its solid-component catching face to face the slurry surface and to incline relative to the horizontal plane; and a solid-component receiver 3 disposed on the lower end of the filter 10.
