PSOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a dictionary face image input device 102 for inputting a dictionary face image in a certain fixed photographing direction together with the photographing direction information; a face direction characteristic quantity extraction device 103 which extracts a characteristic quantity from the dictionary face image based on the input photographing direction information; an image input device 105 for inputting an image of recognition object; a face area detection device 106 which detects a face area based on its photographing direction from the input image; a characteristic quantity extraction device 107 which extracts a characteristic quantity from the face area detected based on the photographing direction; a similarity calculation device 109 which calculates a similarity between the characteristic quantity extracted from the dictionary face image by the extraction device 103 and the characteristic quantity extracted from the face area in the input image by the extraction device 107, and recognizes the face based on the similarity; and an output device 110 which outputs a recognition result based on the similarity.
