An image capture method comprises capturing an (initial) image, generating a feedback image from the image for output to a display means 30, determining the position of a face within the feedback image by facial recognition, corrupting (modifying) the feedback image with respect to the position of a face within the feedback image, and subsequently initiating capture of an output image. The corruption or modification of the feedback image may comprise superimposing a novelty hat or antlers on the head of a person in the image (see Figure 8b) or causing animated or static deformation of the facial image; solarisation or other colour manipulation may be used, and the modification may be accompanied by sound. The aim of the method and apparatus of the invention is to display a humorously modified version of an image of a person to that person, causing the person to smile spontaneously and naturally while a further, final image is taken.
