Items such as letters, groups of letters and pictures, are printed on a paper roll (b) which is driven through a machine. A card is fixed on a panel above the roll. On this card is a column of five groups of letters. Apertures are cut in the programme card so that parts of the paper roll are visible. When the letter groupings of roll and card combine to form words, the paper stops moving. Blackened pads on the paper roll cause the motors to stop due to sensors which, when covered by blackened pads, cut off power to the motors. The five groups of letters are either words or nonsense. A pupil identifies the words and pushes corresponding buttons. His actions are indicated by red and green LEDS and his performance is measured by a data recorder.
