The method involves applying a function to high and low resolution reference images to generate high and low resolution prediction images from high and low resolution common images. A prediction image is filtered from one common image using a wavelet transform to extract high spatial frequency bands. Other prediction image is filtered from other common image, and the bands are filtered using the transform to reconstruct the former prediction image from the former common image. The former prediction image is added to prediction error to reconstruct the former common image by a decoding block. An independent claim is also included for a device for decoding a bit stream in a spatially scalable manner.
