The method involves instantaneously injecting a water conductivity modifying tracer e.g. sodium hypochlorite, into points (I1, I2) respectively in upstream and downstream of a supposed break-point (F) in a water line (1). Conductivity of water is continuously measured in downstream of each of the points from an injection time till a time at which the conductivity returns to a value before injection of the tracer. Rates of water flowing in upstream and downstream of the break-point are calculated from the measurement by placing water conductivity measuring devices (2-5) each with electrodes. An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring conductivity of water for implementing a leak detecting and quantifying method.
