The method involves iteratively estimating data of a data packet, where the data packet is encoded based on an error-correcting code e.g. Reed-Solomon code and Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) code. Validity of a header in the data packet is determined by using an error-detecting code. Hard or soft iterative decoding of the data packet is stopped, if the header is determined as valid. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for iteratively decoding a data packet encoded based on an error-correcting code (2) a computer program comprising instructions for implementing a data packet decoding method.
