The method involves manually selecting operating parameters of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (10) by a user. An air conditioner system or the heater system is normally controlled in accordance with the manually selected operating parameters. An economy mode of operation is selectively commanded by the user. The economy mode overriding the manually selected operating parameters is selectively commanded responsive to a user and the air conditioner system or the heater system at a preselect energy saving level is controlled responsive to the selected economy mode. An independent claim is also included for an energy saving heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system for a passenger compartment.
