The process for the treatment of natural gas having methane and carbon dioxide, comprises deacidifying the natural gas to obtain a carbon dioxide rich stream, transforming a part of deacidified natural gas to obtain a gaseous mixture by a vapor reforming reaction in the presence of water at a pressure and temperature of 5-60 bars and 500-1000[deg]C, transforming the gaseous mixture to methanol to produce an effluent at a pressure and temperature of 30-150 bars and 100-400[deg]C, and contacting the carbon dioxide rich stream with hydrogen rich stream to produce a mixture. The process for the treatment of natural gas having methane and carbon dioxide, comprises deacidifying the natural gas to obtain a carbon dioxide rich stream, transforming a part of deacidified natural gas to obtain a gaseous mixture by a vapor reforming reaction in the presence of water at a pressure and temperature of 5-60 bars and 500-1000[deg]C, transforming the gaseous mixture to methanol to produce an effluent at a pressure and temperature of 30-150 bars and 100-400[deg]C, and contacting the carbon dioxide rich stream with hydrogen rich stream to produce a mixture of methane and water by hydrogenation reaction at a pressure and temperature of 5-150 bars and 100-500[deg]C. The effluent is separated in a methanol rich stream and the hydrogen rich stream. The methane and water mixture is separated in a methane rich fraction and a water rich fraction, which is recycled to the transforming step. The gaseous mixture has hydrogen to carbon monoxide molar ratio of 3-4 moles/mole. The effluent has a methanol to hydrogen molar ratio of greater than 1 mole/mole. The vapor reforming reaction is adjusted so that a part of methane is not consumed.
