A higher-ranking protocol layer (E3) is given precedence over a defined protocol layer (E2) as a next-higher protocol layer. A lower-ranking protocol layer (E1) is made subordinate to the defined protocol layer as a next-lower layer. A test layer (TS) is inserted into a protocol stack in a protocol tester between the higher-ranking and lower-ranking protocol layers. An independent claim is also included for a method for implementing a test function in a protocol tester for a protocol stack in a device to be tested.
