The method involves configuring a controller (18), and an algorithm for determining a ratio between actual torque and registered torque, and storing the ratio in an accessible memory (47) during occurrence of a throttle valve event, which is specified in advance, where the ratio is accessed for determining the presence of a deviation. The ratio indicates the presence of the deviation, if the ratio is greater than one and the ratio indicates the absence of the deviation, when the ratio is smaller than one. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining the use of an engine torque increasing device.
