The oil separator (1) has a line (2) for guiding a gas from a pressure-sided inlet (3) to a suction-sided discharge opening (4) of the line. An oil separating element (5) is arranged in the line. A bypass valve (7) i.e. diaphragm valve, is arranged in a bypass line, where the bypass valve locks the bypass line when inlet-sided pressure abutting against the oil separating element falls below a closing pressure. The bypass valve opens the bypass line when the inlet-sided pressure abutting against the oil separating element exceeds the closing pressure. An independent claim is also included for a method for separating oil from a blow by gas of a combustion engine.
