The vacuum circuit breaker (1) has a fixed contact (2), a movable contact (3), a circuit breaker housing (13) and a vapor shield (29). The vapor shield is made up of electrically conducting material, which is so aligned that electrical capacitance is provided between the vapor shield and another electrical conducting part (27,31) of the vacuum circuit breaker. The electrical potential of the vapor shield is adjusted to a preselected value. An independent claim is also included for the method for adjusting the electrical potential of the vapor shield.
