The baking oven (11) has a baking oven muffle (13) and a heating unit and/or a grill heating body (15) provided in the baking oven muffle. An auxiliary device (23) and an atomizer (24) are formed for inserting a fluid e.g. water, into the oven muffle in an atomized form and/or as an aerosol (25). The auxiliary device and the atomizer are arranged in a lower area of the oven muffle, and an emission direction of the fluid is directed horizontally and/or into a middle area of the oven muffle. The auxiliary device has the atomizer running along a horizontal line. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a baking oven.
