The method involves determining a fuel-air-ratio of a gas mixture based on a characteristic characterizing a combustion-condition. The combustion-condition is characterized by a fuel beginning and/or a combustion-balance point. The combustion-condition is determined by determination of temporal characteristics of a cylinder pressure. The combustion-condition is determined by determination of a low-frequency impact sound signal.
