A borate-based green phosphor using VUV as an excitation source, a method for preparing the phosphor, and a light emitting device using the phosphor are provided to improve luminous efficiency, color purity and brightness. A borate-based green phosphor is represented by (Y_x Gd_(1-x))_(1-y) Ga3(BO3)4: Tb_y, wherein 0=x=1; and 0y=1. The phosphor is prepared by mixing an yttrium precursor, a gadolinium precursor, a gallium precursor, a boron precursor and a terbium precursor; drying the mixture at 100-150 deg.C for 1-24 hours; heat treating the dried mixture at 800-1,100 deg.C for 3-10 hours; and optionally pulverizing the heat treated one.
