A grain refiner of cast magnesium alloys and a method for grain refining of cast magnesium alloys using the same are provided, wherein the grain refiner of cast magnesium alloys is excellent in a refinement effect and is environmentally friendly as compared with hexachloroethane by selecting magnesium carbonate in an inorganic compound containing carbon, thereby adding the magnesium carbonate or a mixture of the magnesium carbonate and other grain refiner into molten magnesium. A grain refiner of a cast magnesium alloy comprises 0.1 to 5.0 wt.% of a magnesium carbonate(MgCO3) powder added to an Al-containing magnesium alloy melt based on the amount of the melt. The grain refiner of the cast magnesium alloy comprises at least one fine powder of aluminum carbide(Al4C3) and silicon carbide(SiC) in addition to the magnesium carbonate. A method for grain refining of a cast magnesium alloy comprises: a refiner adding process of adding a magnesium carbonate(MgCO3) powder in an amount of 0.5 to 5.0 wt.% to the Al-containing magnesium alloy melt relative to the melt amount at a refiner adding temperature of 650 to 760 deg.C after melting an Al-containing magnesium alloy; and a casting process of casting the mixture after maintaining the mixture for at least 5 minutes. The refiner adding process comprises adding to the Al-containing magnesium alloy melt at least one fine powder of aluminum carbide(Al4C3) and silicon carbide(SiC) in addition to the magnesium carbonate.
