摘要
A feature-preserving simplification method of 3D(three-dimensional) mesh data is provided to simplify a complicated 3D mesh model to a user desired level, and reduce time and costs by reducing a manual operation of a designer in a 3D geometry model. 3D mesh data is received from a 3D range scanning system(S100). An approximated surface is generated for points of 3D mesh data by using MLS(Moving Least Squares) approximation technique(S110). Curvatures and curvature differentiation values for each point on the surface are calculated(S120). A ridge point is searched by measuring zero-crossing of a curvature differentiation at a Delaunay edge, namely, neighbor information obtained by connecting each point(S130). Zero-crossing is measured by using a third-order or fourth-order differentiation value to extract feature points(S140). A ridge point is randomly selected and connected to a nearby ridge point, which is repeatedly performed to generate a ridge line(S150). An unnecessary feature line is removed from the ridge lines, namely, from feature lines(S160). An edge and a quadric error metric are calculated with respect to the feature lines and feature-preserved(S170,S180).
