A PID(Proportional Integral Derivative) controller using a fuzzy criterion function and an automatic tuning method thereof are provided to enhance adaptability by controlling weights corresponding to the variation of non operation time and time constant of a plant. A target value is inputted(S200). Weights of fuzzy criterion function are set(S202). A controlled object is identified using an output of the controlled object(S204). An initial value is calculated using the identification of the controlled object(S206). Transfer function of the controlled object is calculated using the initial value(S208). Step response is calculated using the transfer function(S210). Waveform is analyzed by comparing the step response with the target value(S212). The fuzzy criterion function is calculated using error due to the analysis(S214). A current fuzzy criterion function value is compared with a previous fuzzy criterion function value(S216). The comparison result is stored when the current fuzzy criterion function value is greater than the previous fuzzy criterion function value(S218). Then, the fuzzy criterion function value is determined when the stored fuzzy criterion function value is a maximum value.
