A method for updating channel information in a portable Internet system, a mobile communication terminal and the portable Internet system using the same are provided to receive channel information about a handover BS by using handover request/response messages during a handover process, thereby enabling the mobile communication terminal to update the channel information about the handover BS quickly before handover. A method for updating channel information comprises the following steps of: receiving a network management message including channel information about neighbor BSs(Base Stations) from a serving BS(S310); extracting and storing channel information about the neighbor BSs included in the network management message(S320); transmitting a handover request message to the serving BS(S330); receiving a handover response message including channel information about at least one handover BS(S340); extracting channel information about the handover BS from the prestored channel information about the neighbor BSs and determining whether the channel information about the handover BS matches the channel information about the handover BS included in the handover response message(S350); updating the channel information about at least one prestored handover BS to channel information about at least one handover BS included in the handover response message(S360); transmitting a handover check message to the serving BS(S370); and resuming a handover process(S380).
