A method for determining separation of an optical cable from an optical time domain reflectometer and an optical time domain reflectometer are provided to protect eyes of a user from a laser diode by determining a separating state of the optical cable without using an additional device. An optical pulse corresponding to a pulse driving signal is generated by inputting the pulse driving signal. The optical pulse is inputted into an optical cable as an inspection target and the light reflected from the optical cable is branched. The light is converted to an electrical signal and the electrical signal is converted to a digital signal. The digital signal is collected and processed(S2). An optical cable separation process is performed to stop the generation of the optical pulse by determining a separating state of the optical cable before the size of the collected waveform becomes a reference value of 1(S3-S5).
