The invention relates to a method for the production of a filter material for the removal of small particles from a gas or liquid stream, said porous material consists of a ceramic material having a thermo stable pore structure, which method comprises the following steps: • mixing of the ceramic material with latex of polymer particles, said latex forming a continuous network in the precursor material, if necessary addition of water and/or a surface active agent and with the addition of organic fibers and/or particles of synthetic or natural origin. • hardening of the mixture obtained in that way - drying the hardened mixture - removal of the fibers and/or particles and the polymeric latex particles at elevated temperature by thermal decomposition and - sintering at high temperature under formation of a porous ceramic material.
